Why I Write

At the heart of who I am, I am a storyteller.

I tell stories that remind us what it means to be Human through the fractured lens of multiculturalism and a love of nature. My plays are cinematic and fast-paced, featuring heightened realism with a dark comic edge that explores questions of identity, purpose, and where our true homes are. I love to write about messy, complicated, sharp-toothed women. About the cost of leaving your home, and about the cost of coming back to it. And about whether you can ever truly know who you are.

I am a child of two worlds. As the daughter of a girl from the Philippines and a boy from the Idaho desert who fell in love, this duality exists in me and is reflected in my artistic life. I am one in a long line of strong matriarchs in my family who traveled alone to build a new life and my work is strongly influenced by my experience growing up in Idaho as a queer biracial woman.

Within me is a deep love of the American West and its beautiful and evocative landscape, particularly the mountains and deserts. The inspiration I find in nature and connection to the land from which I come is threaded throughout all of my stories.

I like to say that I write plays for people who love to watch television. As someone who loves long-form stories and watches far too much television, there is much inspiration to be found in the medium of television that can be translated to the stage.

I exist on the edge of the older Millennial generation, the generation that still played outside with our friends until it got dark. The last generation to grow up without the ever-present hum of computers and the constant nagging of cell phones. That love of freedom and play is reflected in the work that I do.
